THE International Saint-Georges FESTIVAL

saintgeorges

The Saint-Georges International Festival is an annual event whose major objective is to pay tribute to one of greatest – yet still widely unrecognized – historical figures of African descent, Joseph Bologne (1745-1799), better known as Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

The International Festival, whose mission is to celebrate the music of Saint-Georges, and more generally his life, promote performing artists of color and perform classical music written by composers of African descents in fusion with the standard repertoire will feature top-notch internationally renowned musicians from over 13 countries including soprano Magali Léger, violinist Anne-Estelle Medouze and clarinettist Anthony McGill (a performer at President Obama’s Inauguration), and historians, writers and musicologists, such as Gabriel Banat, Dominique-René de Lerma, Walter E. Smith, Chapman Roberts, Michelle Garnier Panafieu, Pierre Bardin and more.

Saint Georges having been the God of Weapons, the FESTIVAL will offer a conference accompanied with a show dedicated to the artistic fencing, directed by Daniel Marciano and with the cooperation of young fencers of the Circles of Fencing of Guadeloupe and France.

This year, festival will take place in Basse-Terre, the capital of Guadeloupe and birth place of Saint Georges, at the main venues of the city and is organized by the Comité d’organisation du Festival International Saint-Georges, spearheaded by Maestro Marlon Daniel, Artistic Director, Jean-Claude Halley, Président of the Association and Catherine Pizon, Executive Director.

The INTERNATIONAL SAINT-GEORGES FESTIVAL represents for the Basse-Terre in particular and Guadeloupe generally an undeniable economic contribution. For this reason, the Committee of the Tourism of the Islands of Guadeloupe spontaneously brought its support.

The international committee thanks the authorities for the instruction of files of help on which the DRAC of Guadeloupe already expressed a very favorable opinion.

He also thanks very warmly Madam the Mayor of Baillif and Madam the Senator-mayor de Basse-Terre for their implication in the organization of the festival.

The International Committee of Organization hopes that the public will answer in number and will enjoy the Basse-Terre sense of welcome.

Le mot du Président du Comité

When the Maestro Marlon Daniel, the afro-American conductor, announced us his intention to come to the Country of Saint Georges to pay tribute to the Chevalier we told him at once the difficulties of the project. But Marlon Daniel communicated us his fervor for such a project and we started believing in it.

The difficult way to set up the INTERNATIONAL SAINT-GEORGES FESTIVAL also brought to the Committee beautiful satisfactions due to the many contacts taken in Guadeloupe, in Europe, and in the United States. These meetings, these exchanges, these testimonies convinced us that this tribute to Joseph Bologne, Knight of Saint Georges, on his native land, was a necessity. The first season was not able to take place in 2010 as we had wished it, and for reasons very independent from our will; we postponed the first season in 2011.

The already nearly achieved work is considerable. All our friends are confident and encouraging.

We shall be happy to welcome you in Guadeloupe in April, 2011 for the INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL SAINT-GEORGES. On this site which will remain opened you will find as one goes along the informations of the preparation of this festival.

We  warmly thank all those who support us.

Le mot du directeur artistique

Marlon_DanielI created the Saint-Georges International Festival alongside Jean-Claude Halley and Catherine Pizon, two exceptional people with vision and strength. Both like myself had their own vision of creating something special in honor of the French Caribbean personage that was one of history's greatest composers, violinists, conductors, fencers and athletes of all time, Joseph Bologne called Le Chevalier de Saint Georges.

We began to communicate in the winter of 2009 with the help of friends who knew our passion. Pulling our ideas together over the months to follow, we soon formed the concept of the Saint Georges International. A festival that would celebrate not only the many faceted talents of an extraordinary historical figure but also the culture and beauty of his place of birth the French Antilles.

I would like to personally welcome you to this milestone season where we will introduce you to an international array of virtuoso performers who like the founders share a passion for Saint Georges. This season includes outstanding soloists Caribbean born opera super star soprano Magali Léger, Orchestre National d'Île de France Concert Master violinist Ann-Estelle Medouze and clarinetist Anthony McGill who not only is principal clarinet for the Metropolitan Opera in New York but also had the honor of performing for US President Obama at the inauguration ceremony. Two international groups,The New York based Ensemble du Monde and l'Ensemble Chevalier de Saint-Georges, based in Guadeloupe, will join, not only to perform chamber music but also  to form with other musicians from the festival  the Saint Georges Festival Orchestra. There will be four concerts and a plethora of other arts and cultural events.

I look forward to greeting you,

Marlon Daniel
